Can you an adult AED (i.e. one without paediatric pads) be used on infants?

Yes, if you follow the Resuscitation Council 2025 Paediatric Life Support (basic and advanced) Guidelines, which are as follows:

  1. Activate the paediatric mode, if available, in all infants and children weighing less than 25 kg (i.e. approximately 8 years of age).
  2. In larger children and adolescents, use the AED in standard adult mode.
  3. If the AED does not have instructions for children, use it in standard adult mode.

Place adult-size pads as follows:

For infants and children weighing less than 25kg, place one pad mid-chest immediately left of the sternum and one pad on the back, placing the centre of the pad between the shoulder blades.

For children over 25kg and adolescents, either:

Place one pad mid-chest immediately left of the sternum and one pad on the back, placing the centre of the pad between the shoulder blades. One pad is placed below the right collar bone and the other is placed on the side, high up below the armpit.
