Do you need GCSEs to be a lifeguard?

You do not need any specific qualifications to become a lifeguard, and upon passing the NPLQ Gen 10 assessment, you will receive an RLSS UK Qualifications Level 3 Award in Pool Lifeguarding Qualification, which could assist you with applications for academic establishments.

To be eligible to attend a course, you must be 16 years old or above at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment, be physically fit and be able to:

  • Jump/dive into deep water
  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back
  • In deep water, tread water for 30 seconds
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool
  • Climb out unaided without a ladder or steps and where the pool design permits
